Taking advantage of the very high energy content of directly heated steam, solar thermal power can now be delivered at costs that are equivalent to coal-fired power stations, without the pollution and other difficulties associated with high volume coal handling.

Ride the Ray’s Solar Thermal technology balances a variety of engineering parameters for most effective plant operation:

Use of long focal length collector relaxes demands on mirror curvature; these flatter mirrors are more cost effective and robust;
Minimized wind resistance ensures reduced structural loads and cost
Lower temperature steam permits the use of more standard components and eases demands made on thermal transport
Using steam to carry thermal energy reduces transfer losses

Of course, a solar reserve margin is built in to the solar field to enhance output and raise the capacity factor.

The overall cost of solar thermal technology used in Ride the Ray projects is highly competitive with coal and is far more cost effective and relevant than Open Cycle gas turbines for peak load-following.
