European Vision of micro & co-generation in the future

What is Green Power?

Generation of electricity using any renewable source with no direct harmful emissions is referred to as "green power". Such energy sources include solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind, tidal, hydroelectric nuclear fusion and convection tunnel. While nuclear fission (generating electric power as a result of a controlled nuclear reaction) may be considered by some as green, the fission reaction generates highly dangerous waste that is costly and difficult to contain. Biogas is excluded as a green power source since its combustion generates greenhouse gases.

Why don't we just use bio diesel or ethanol to run generators?

Of course these fuels are being used right now and are filling an immediate need as a backup when the grid fails. They are not suited to run for loads larger than 20kW and for anything other than short (3 hour) backup sessions. Furthermore, they continue to generate greenhouse gases, which are the major cause of global warming. On a total cost of ownership basis, internal-combustion generators are more costly than Photovoltaic systems over 15 years.

Generators also require periodic maintenance and expose the operator to fuel price increases and fuel supply hiccups. One can set up one's own bio-diesel or ethanol plants, of course. This requires the space and the time to operate, as well as the effort required to source materials. Ride the Ray is committed to removing carbon from the industrial power chain worldwide, hence our commitment to green power.
